A little about our heritage
John Street Dental began life as P J Houston Dental in February of 1976. Dr Peter Houston, having recently completed his bonded years with the Royal Australian Air Force, found Redcliffe to be a beautiful seaside village full of down to earth people.
With the help of his brother Ian the two men renovated a small shop in Clarke’s Arcade near the Redcliffe Jetty. Here Dr Peter worked hard to grow the practice for the next 16 years. Dr Peter developed a strong following based around his friendly personality, excellent clinical skill and reasonable prices.
Dr Peter’s passion for Redcliffe saw him enter local politics during this time. He was to spend a total of 17 years working both as a dentist and as a local councillor at the old Redcliffe City Council. Believe it or not the Redcliffe Lagoon was even given the nick name “Pete’s Puddle” in the local media in recognition of his efforts to initiate the “Settlement Cove” Project.
Back at the clinic things were full steam ahead and the patient load was beginning to strain the “cosy” quarters of Clarke’s Arcade. So in 1992 it was decided a big move was required to a more expansive premises. 116 John Street became available and necessary approvals to convert the 4 bedroom brick home to a spacious surgery were obtained.
In 1999 the next major renovation added a third surgery, a new office and a staff room. Around this time Dr Gregg Stadhams came to work at John Street. Dr Gregg often reflects that the moment he walked in “the vibe felt right” – an experience many patients share.
Drs Peter and Gregg would welcome Dr David Houston and Dr Andrew Lim to John Street as it expanded between 2009 -11. “We were blessed to be mentored early by such a wealth of experience. They knew everything there was to know about their profession backwards and all learnt the best and most reliable techniques immediately.
Also in 2010, a renovation completed Dr Peter’s vision for the practice. A fourth surgery was constructed and leading ADEC 500 chairs, clinic room TVs were installed throughout.
In 2013 a major technology upgrade was undertaken with the 20,000 patients files converted to digital records and a cutting edge digital x-ray system installed (not a small job!)
By sticking to the core values of Dr Peter, the practice has continued to grow under the joint care of Dr David Houston (General Manager).
