I’d rather have a root canal

Of all dental procedures, Root Canal Treatment is the one that causes the most apprehension, but is probably the one that’s least understood. The purpose of root canal treatment at John Street Dental is to relieve pain and restore a tooth to its full form and function.

With modern dental techniques and pain relief options at John Street Dental, root canal treatment can be completed quickly and with little to no discomfort.

A tooth may require root canal treatment because of an infection from severe decay, gum disease or an accident has damaged the tooth’s nerve requiring its removal.

The procedure involves isolating the tooth with a rubber sheet to prevent any infection from spreading. Then any tooth decay is removed and a channel is created so the nerve can be removed using very fine instruments.

A tooth can have one or up to four canals. The root canals are re-shaped and thoroughly cleaned and sterilised. Once the tooth is free of any sign of infection, each root canal is filled with a special compound so they don’t remain hollow.

As the procedure often requires the removal of a large amount of the tooth, a crown is placed to restore strength and function. A titanium post may also be placed if the tooth requires additional support.

Depending on the location of the tooth this may be a porcelain crown for front teeth or a gold or alloy based crown for back teeth that need to withstand extreme biting and chewing forces.
