Our philosophy at John Street Dental is that the prevention of dental problems is always preferred over treatment. And the best place to prevent the need for dental treatment is at home with a thorough oral hygiene routine of brushing twice a day and flossing once a day plus a healthy balanced diet.
Brushing and flossing removes plaque, a sticky clear film that accumulates on the biting surfaces of your teeth, in the spaces between the teeth, where the teeth meet the gum, (gum pockets) and along the gum line. If not removed daily plaque hardens and becomes tartar, which is unable to be removed by a toothbrush.
It’s the bacteria in plaque that reacts with sugars and starch in food and drinks to produce acids, which attack your tooth enamel and gums for up to 20 minutes after consuming them. It’s this acid that leads to the development of dental cavities.
