From your Local Redcliffe Dentist, Dental anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of…

Bad memories and experiences in the past, needle phobias, the feeling of loss of control, uncomfortable close contact, the sights, the smells and more have all been shared with us as the reason that a patient has felt anxiety and avoided coming to the dentist.  You are not alone, dental anxiety is a very common thing.   The staff and dentists here at John Street Dental are well equipped and experienced in helping and guiding a nervous patient through there dental experience.  Let John Street Dental make an otherwise negative experience a positive one.

Different methods for staying calm at the dentist…

Communication –

Positive communication between you and your dentist should be the first step in dealing with dental anxiety.  Discuss your fears and concerns with your dentist.  Once this is established your dentist will be better able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more comfortable.  For some, it may help to ask your dentist to explain what’s happening at each stage of the procedure.  This is a way to mentally prepare for what’s to come next.  Get to know your dentist, establish what works for you, and stick with that dentist if he/she makes you feel most comfortable- That way you are more likely to want to come back next time.

Environment –

A calm, relaxing environment is likely to help you feel more at ease.  Music or TV in the background can also help to distract you, something which we do provide here at John Street dental.  As an idea, bring in your music player of choice and headphones and try listening to your favourite music.  Sometimes bringing a family member or friend for support  could also help to ease anxiety when having treatment.

Medication –

Some pre-sedative medication, such as Valium, can be taken an hour before an appointment to help you with relaxation.

Sedation –

Another option for anxiety here at John Street Dental for both adults and children is sedation. We have a range of sedation options that can be discussed with your dentist.

General Anaesthesia –

Another option for those who can simply not bare to face the dental chair, is to go under General Anesthetic for dental treatment.  This can be a good option for patients who need dental work done, with the added bonus of being asleep for the whole procedure.  For example having wisdom teeth removed or even just for a clean and/or fillings.  This option is more costly, but can be the best or only option for those who would prefer to go to sleep and wake up with all their dental woes taken care of.  This option requires an advance booking with a specialist dentist as it needs to be administered and monitored by a specialist anesthetist.  Here at John Street Dental we can assist in referring a patient to the appropriate establishment/ Dental Specialist for this option if required.

If you suffer from dental phobia, our dental team are experienced in providing the very best in care and treatment using the latest technologies.
