There is an alarming increase in the consumption of sports and energy drinks, especially among adolescents. What is more alarming, is the irreversible damage that it is causing to young teeth.
There is a common misconception that sports/ energy drinks will improve sporting performance and is the “better choice” of drink compared to soft drinks. When in actual fact these drinks are essentially bathing teeth in acid and causing irreversible damage to the teeths outer layer —specifically, the high acidity levels in the drinks erode tooth enamel, the glossy outer layer of the tooth. This kind of damage can lead to significant tooth sensitivity, wear and tooth decay long term. It is important that parents and young adults about the downside of these drinks. Most don’t realise that something as seemingly harmless as a sports or energy drink can do a lot of damage to the teeth.
John Street Dental recommends that patients minimize their intake of sports and energy drinks. If you do consume these types of drinks it is recommended to chew sugar-free gum and/or rinse the mouth with water following consumption of the drinks, which helps to wash away the harmful acid and stimulates saliva. Also it is important to wait at least an hour to brush your teeth after consuming sports and energy drinks. If in doubt- Drink water.
