Implants, Extractions and Oral Surgery – What your Local Redcliffe Dentist wants you to know

dental surgery

As your Local Redcliffe Dentist knows, no one wants to have a tooth extraction!  Unfortunately, an extraction is the only option available in some situations.

Dentists can also perform oral surgeries such as wisdom teeth removal and the insertion of Dental Implants.

There are several reasons for patients being referred to an Oral Surgeon for extractions –

Complex Root Structure – long and curved roots on teeth can cause an extraction to become difficult and can often involve the major nerves in the jaw.

Impacted Teeth – when a tooth is impacted and still partially or fully under the surface, surgery is often required.

Complications during extraction – sometimes what looks like a simple extraction can turn into a difficult situation.  The tooth could crack or the roots can break and an Oral Surgeon may be needed to complete the procedure.

Certain Medications and Sickness – some medications and illness can affect your bone and can result in the healing process being delayed.  If this is the case a dentist can refer you to an Oral Surgeon as a precaution.

Before mOPG imageany oral surgeries, your dentist will write a referral to have an OPG xray done – this shows your whole mouth, as well as where the nerves in the jaws are situated and the shapes of tooth roots.

Many patients become quite distressed at the thought of having any form of oral surgery.  There is a common misconception that to have surgical tooth extraction you must have General Anaesthetic.  This, for the most part is inaccurate – prior to tooth extraction your dentist will numb the area with local anaesthetic, or you can also have conscious sedation (also known as Happy Gas) to help with dental anxiety.

Another concern with oral surgery is post operative pain – how much pain will the patient be in after procedures? Recovery from surgical procedures will be gradual, but patients should see some improvement every day. The healing process can continue for between 3 and 10 days after the procedure, depending on the level of complication.
