Flossing – why is it important? According to your Local Redcliffe Dentist

So, why is flossing important?  Your Local Redcliffe Dentists at John Street Dental can tell you that flossing your teeth can make them appear brighter and cleaner by removing plaque and food remnants that you may not see in the mirror or in areas that your toothbrush can’t reach. If you only brush but do not floss, approximately 30% of your teeth’s surfaces remain uncleaned. This is due to the bristles of your toothbrush only reaching so far.

Have you ever had a family member or friend tell complain about bad breath?  Flossing can prevent bad breath – unpleasant odours can be caused when food is trapped inbetween teeth and the gumline contains bacteria.  Daily flossing can help to remove this odour from your mouth.

If we don’t look after our teeth, we are allowing plaque to build up which can lead to gum disease.  When your Local Redcliffe Dentist refers to gum disease, they are referring to the infection and inflammation of the gums.  Periodontal disease emerges when plaque slowly erodes your soft gum tissue.  If the periodontal disease is left untreated it can become periodontitis which results in root canal issues and tooth decay.  Flossing is an effective and easy way you can remove the bacteria at the base of the teeth.

People often find flossing difficult and awkward.  But there are several flossing techniques which can be adopted.

Use a piece of floss approximately 30cm or 15 to 18inches long. Slide it between each tooth, wrap it around in the shape of a C, and polish up and down.

Floss holders can also be used.  If you are unable to floss, try a two pronged plastic floss holder.  This handy tool allows you to clean with one hand!

There is a common misconception that flossing causes healthy gums to bleed.  If the gums are bleeding, it might be because you aren’t flossing as effectively or frequently as needed.  The result is a build up of bacteria that irritates gum tissue.   You will find that bleeding of the gums will cease in a relatively small amount of time if you floss gently and regularly.
