Mouthguards Part 2 – Tips for Custom Fitted Mouthguards
Custom-made guards may require adjustment when first used – see your dentist if your mouthguard is uncomfortable, rubbing on the gums or you are developing ulcers.
Mouthguards for children can be made to accommodate baby teeth which might be lost during the life of the mouthguard – it may be necessary to have a new mouthguard made if several baby teeth are lost as the shapes of the adult teeth are different.
Special mouthguards can be made for combat sports, providing extra reinforcement for the front teeth.
A mouthguard is only protective if worn!  It must be comfortable and allow free breathing or else it will likely be removed during activity.
Custom fitted mouthguards can be fabricated in your team colours and names can be incorporated into the design to allow recovery if misplaced.
Many health insurance funds recognise the importance of preventing painful and expensive injuries and so support the use of mouthguards by contributing to the cost (or covering the cost completely) of a custom-fitted mouthguard
