Every child’s smile develops differently. Sometimes it’s helpful to assess the teeth and bite while your child is still growing, especially if you’ve noticed crowding, an unusual bite or changes in the way their teeth are coming through.
We’ll take a gentle look at how your child’s teeth and jaws are developing and explain whether anything needs attention now or whether it’s best to simply keep monitoring their growth.

The basics
Children’s teeth and jaws change a lot as they grow, and sometimes it can be helpful to check how everything is developing before all of the adult teeth have come through.
We’ll look at your child’s teeth, bite and jaw development, explain anything we notice and let you know whether treatment may be helpful now or whether it’s simply something we should keep an eye on.
There’s no need to rush into treatment. Sometimes the best approach is to monitor their development and review things again as they grow.

We’ll explain anything we notice clearly and let you know whether it’s something to monitor or whether early treatment may be helpful.
If early treatment is recommended, we’ll explain why, what it involves and how it may support your child’s developing smile.
If treatment isn’t needed yet, that’s completely okay. We can continue to monitor their development at future visits and reassess when the time is right.
Good to know
Around age seven is a good time for a first orthodontic assessment, as the adult teeth are starting to come through and we can get a clearer picture of how the teeth and jaws are developing.
If you notice crowding, an unusual bite or anything that concerns you before then, we’re always happy to take a look. We’ll let you know whether anything needs attention now or whether it’s simply something to keep an eye on as they grow.
Not necessarily. For many children, early orthodontic care is simply about keeping an eye on how their teeth and jaws are developing as they grow.
If we feel treatment may be helpful at an earlier stage, we’ll explain why and talk you through the options. Otherwise, we can simply keep reviewing their development and let you know when, or if, braces or clear aligners may be appropriate.
Not always. Early orthodontic care can sometimes help guide development or make future treatment more straightforward, but it doesn’t guarantee that braces or clear aligners won’t be needed later.
We’ll monitor your child’s teeth and jaw as they grow and keep you informed about what may be helpful at each stage.
We’ll take things at a pace that feels comfortable for your child and make sure they know what to expect along the way.
