Inlays and Onlays to Restore and Protect Your Tooth

Inlays and onlays may be recommended when a tooth needs more support than a standard filling can provide, but a full crown may not be necessary.

They are custom made to fit the damaged area of the tooth and help restore its shape, strength and function. We’ll assess the tooth carefully and explain whether an inlay, onlay or another restoration is the most suitable option for you.

The basics

A Custom Restoration for a Damaged Tooth

An inlay or onlay may be recommended when a tooth needs more support than a standard filling can provide, but a full crown may not be necessary.

An inlay fits within the tooth, while an onlay can also cover one or more of the raised areas of the tooth. Both are custom made to fit your tooth and help restore its shape, strength and function.

We’ll assess the tooth carefully and explain whether an inlay, onlay or another type of restoration is the most suitable option for you.

Why patients choose inlays & onlays

How Inlays and Onlays Can Help

Extra support for a damaged tooth

An inlay or onlay can provide additional support when a standard filling may not be enough for the amount of tooth structure that has been lost.

Preserves healthy tooth structure

Where suitable, an inlay or onlay may allow us to preserve more of your natural tooth than a full crown.

Custom-made for your tooth

Each restoration is made to fit the individual tooth carefully, helping restore its shape, function and bite.

Designed to look natural

Inlays and onlays can be made from tooth-coloured materials and selected to complement your surrounding teeth.

What to expect

Your Inlay or Onlay Treatment, Step by Step

Assessment & planning

We’ll assess the tooth, explain whether an inlay or onlay may be suitable, and provide a clear treatment plan and estimate before you decide how you’d like to proceed.

Prepare the tooth

The damaged or weakened area is carefully prepared, and detailed scans or impressions are taken so your restoration can be made accurately.

Your restoration is made

Your custom inlay or onlay is created to fit your tooth and restore its shape and function. A temporary restoration may be placed while the final one is being made.

Fit & finish

Once your inlay or onlay is ready, we’ll check the fit, bite and appearance before securing it in place. We’ll also explain how to care for your restoration and maintain it over time.

Inlay & Onlay Questions

What’s the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?

An inlay fits within the centre of the tooth, while an onlay extends further to cover one or more of the tooth’s raised edges, or cusps.

Both are custom-made restorations that may be considered when a filling isn’t quite enough, but a full crown may not be necessary. We’ll assess your tooth carefully and explain which option, if either, is most suitable for you.

For smaller areas of damage, a filling may be the most suitable option. If more of the tooth has been weakened or lost, an inlay or onlay may provide better support than a standard filling.

We’ll assess the tooth and explain which option is most appropriate based on how much healthy tooth structure remains.

Inlays and onlays can last for many years with good oral hygiene and regular dental care, although this can vary depending on the tooth, your bite and everyday habits.

We’ll check the restoration at your regular visits and let you know if anything needs attention over time.

Inlays and onlays can be made from tooth-coloured materials and carefully shade-matched to suit your natural teeth.

We’ll choose the colour and shape to complement the surrounding teeth and create a natural-looking result.

The cost is very case dependent and can vary depending on the tooth, the material used and the type of restoration needed.

After your assessment, we’ll provide a clear, itemised estimate and talk you through the costs before you decide how you’d like to proceed.
