Your gums play an important part in keeping your teeth healthy and supported. If you’ve noticed bleeding when brushing, tenderness, swelling or changes around your gums, it’s worth having them checked.

We’ll take the time to assess your gum health, explain what we can see and talk you through any treatment that may help.

What to expect

Looking After Your Gum Health

Assess your gums

We’ll carefully check your gums, measure any areas of concern and look for signs of inflammation or bone loss. We’ll then explain what we find in clear, simple terms.

Clean below the gumline

If deeper cleaning is needed, we’ll carefully remove plaque and tartar from areas that are difficult to reach with brushing alone.

Review your progress

We’ll check how your gums are responding to treatment and make any adjustments needed along the way.

Keep your gums healthy

We’ll give you advice for caring for your gums at home and recommend a review schedule based on your individual needs.

Gum Disease Questions

Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush?

Bleeding gums can be a sign of inflammation, often caused by plaque building up around the gumline, although there can be other reasons too. We’ll check your gums carefully, explain what may be causing the bleeding and recommend the right care for you. In some cases, a professional clean may be recommended to remove plaque and tartar that brushing alone can’t reach.

We’ll do our best to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment. If your gums are particularly sensitive, local anaesthetic can be used to numb the area before deeper cleaning begins. We’ll also check in with you as we go and take things at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Early gum inflammation, known as gingivitis, can often be reversed with professional care and good oral hygiene at home.

More advanced gum disease, or periodontitis, cannot be fully reversed but it can often be managed and stabilised with the right treatment and ongoing care. We’ll assess your gums and explain what this means for you.

How often you’ll need to visit will depend on your gum health and how well things are responding to treatment.

Your dentist will recommend a review and cleaning schedule that suits your individual needs, which may be more frequent at first and adjusted over time as your gums become more stable.
