The basics
Jaw pain, clicking, tightness or headaches can have a number of different causes, and every patient is a little different.
We’ll take the time to listen to what you’ve been experiencing, assess your jaw, teeth and bite, and explain what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Depending on what we find, treatment may include a custom-made splint, changes to everyday habits or other supportive care. We’ll talk you through the options and recommend what may be most suitable for you.
Why patients choose us for TMJ & jaw pain
We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms and assess your jaw, teeth, bite and any habits that may be contributing to your discomfort.
For some patients, a custom dental splint may be recommended to help protect the teeth and support more comfortable jaw function.
If you clench or grind your teeth, a splint may also help reduce wear and protect the teeth from further damage.
There isn’t one solution that suits everyone. We’ll explain the options that may be appropriate for you and recommend a plan based on your individual needs.
What to expect
We’ll talk through your symptoms and carefully assess your jaw, teeth, bite and muscles to understand what may be contributing to your discomfort.
We’ll talk you through the findings clearly and help you understand the possible causes of your symptoms.
Depending on your needs, this may include a custom-made splint, changes to everyday habits or other supportive care.
We’ll check how you’re responding to treatment and make any adjustments or recommendations needed along the way.
Good to know
Jaw pain and TMJ symptoms can have a number of different causes. Clenching or grinding, stress, changes in your bite, joint problems or muscle tension may all play a part.
We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms, assess your jaw and bite, and talk you through what may be contributing in your case.
For some patients, yes. A custom made night splint can help protect your teeth from the effects of clenching or grinding and may also reduce some of the strain on your jaw muscles.
We’ll assess your symptoms first and let you know whether a splint is likely to be a suitable option for you.
Not necessarily. The first step is a careful assessment so we can understand what may be contributing to your symptoms. Depending on what we find, treatment may be as simple as a custom splint, changes to everyday habits or other supportive care. If anything more involved is recommended, we’ll explain why and talk you through your options first.
Yes, it can. Over time, clenching or grinding may place extra pressure on your teeth and contribute to wear, small fractures or cracks. We’ll check your teeth for signs of this and, if needed, talk you through ways to help protect them and reduce further damage.
