Informed care
Understanding Treatment Risks
Every dental treatment has benefits and, like any healthcare, some risks. We believe you should understand both before you decide. This page is a general overview; your dentist will always talk through what’s relevant to your specific treatment.
Why we tell you
Informed Decisions, Always
Good care means you’re fully informed. Before any treatment, we explain what’s involved, the expected benefits, the alternatives (including doing nothing), and any risks, so you can make a decision that’s right for you.
The information here is general. The specific risks that apply to you depend on the treatment, your health and your individual circumstances, and your dentist will discuss these with you directly.
In general
Risks That Can Apply to Dental Treatment
Discomfort or swelling
Some treatments can cause temporary discomfort, sensitivity or swelling that settles with time and aftercare.
Infection
As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection, which we take care to minimise and manage.
Anaesthetic & sedation
Local anaesthetic and sedation are very safe but carry their own small risks, which we assess and monitor.
Results may vary
Outcomes depend on individual factors. We’ll give you a realistic picture of what to expect.
Existing teeth & restorations
Some treatment affects nearby teeth or existing dental work; we’ll explain where this applies.
Healing & aftercare
Following your aftercare instructions is important to a good result and reducing complications.
Talk to Us First
If you have any questions or concerns about a recommended treatment, please ask. We’d always rather take the time to explain than have you feel uncertain, and you’re free to take that time before deciding.
